The next gen of flagship smartphones, labeled the “super large cups,” is gradually changing towards straight screen designs, and five upcoming brand models have already confirmed that they will be using this form factor. Three of them have already publicly declared their intention, thus confirming the existence of a broader trend in the high-end mobile design arena.
The change goes along with significant improvements in the imaging department, such as the newly upgraded high-dynamic ultra-large bottom main camera and the periscope telephoto lens—these features aim at transforming these gadgets from compact yet powerful to imaging machines.
Battery capacity and efficiency are also among the aspects that receive good attention, thus becoming the sources of the new phase of endurance and performance. However, even though there are many functional benefits, the transition to the flat screen has been met with mixed feelings.
Two of the future models have internal issues as their more aggressive hardware stacking creates a risk that the flat display will not be ergonomic and comfortable in hand when compared to the curved ones.
Nevertheless, this latest generation looks like it will be a multifunctional, highly efficient and well-rounded, satisfying the needs of photography lovers and power users, if we take into account that the design concessions are carefully weighed against the functional gains. We can definitely say that the competition for the best flagship of the year is reaching its boiling point.
